Two Quick Cleaning Tips

cleaningtips

I am in the middle of picking up my house right now, so that the clutter and dishes aren’t an eyesore when A.J. arrives home.

(It was a long night last night. And it’s been a long day today.)

This post describes exactly where I am today. One of the tips Sarah Mae mentions is to clean room by room, rather than in a haphazard way.

I love that tip because it’s one of my cleaning standbys. I thought of a couple more while I was picking up just now:

  1. Start at one side of the doorway and clean till you get to the other side. I do surfaces first in this order, and then the floor. It’s easier to focus with a visual of where to go next.
  2. If you hand-wash your dishes, clean the kitchen before you start washing. Put things away, wipe down the counters, rinse and stack dishes, and sweep the floor first. Then the task of washing is much less intimidating.

Maybe I’m just revealing my cleaning idiosyncrasies…

What are some of your tried-and-true housekeeping methods?

I do rooms at a time too except I do it 15, 20, or 25 minutes at a time. For example, 15 minutes clean, 15 minute break or doing another chore, and then back to 15 minutes to cleaning. And yes, I use a timer to help me out. :-)

If I try to clean all at once, I get too tired and suffer from burnout which in turns, makes the whole house suffer — not a good thing.

I’ve used a timer before too, but having Christian around makes it a little difficult. :-) I have to stop constantly to get him out of trouble, snuggle him, etc. And if he’s napping a timer would wake him up. But it’s a great tool otherwise!

I try to do the dishes in small amounts so they don’t pile up and overwhelm me! We have a dishwasher but we try to use it as a “drying rack” to save water. I’ve learned that it’s much easier to put away a small amount of dishes rather than unload the entire dishwasher!

And I really enjoy vacuuming and sweeping. I’m weird like that!

I don’t particularly enjoy vacuuming, but Christian loves it when I vacuum, so I’m glad he’s not scared of it.

And I agree, I always try to do the dishes right away so they don’t pile up. While I’ve been sick, though, I’ve been doing them in one or two big batches per day, and it’s no fun!

Thanks for the visit to my blog :0)
I really like your tip about starting at one side of the door and cleaning around the room…I think I am going to tell my kids this, that should really help them to make sure they cleaned their whole room….you know, not just the MIDDLE of the floor! LOL

While I’m cooking I try to clean as I go. Once I’ve used a dish wash it up and put it away. Also my biggest cleaning tip is pick up immediately after dinner. This is so hard for me to do because I’m normally so tired at this point, the last thing I want to do is dishes, wipe down table and sweep but, it’s so worth it going to bed and waking up to a clean table/kitchen!

I love to do this too! It is hard to try and clean as you go, or right before you sit down to dinner. But it s SUCH a relief to not have to clean pots and pans after dinner!

I agree! I would much rather take longer to cook because I’m washing as I go, than be faced with a huge pile of pots and pans at the end! And it is so nice just to have to wash plates and silverware after dinner, rather than a huge pile.

I love the idea of cleaning one side of a room to the other, that is ingenious. Must consider that next time. I have no method to my madness, and tend to be all over the place when I clean. I struggle with getting bored with tasks (and crafts…and chores….and anything repetitious) so I have to alternate between the laundry, and dusting, and bounce back and forth. One thing I will say I’ve been learning: clean with things that smell good. Seriously, I remember to clean my bathrooms more regularly because I love the way my bathroom cleaner smells. Is that weird? I dunno, it works. I recently bought some Mrs. Meyers cleaners and they smell so so so so good, I enjoy using them. Psychology! ;)

Mmmm, good idea! I may have to try that next time I run out of cleaning products.

I always hit the kitchen last, but I should always first! Once that is done- I can do anything! (Dishes are not my friends! Hehe!) :)

These are great though!

It’s like getting encourage from a friend each afternoon. So wonderful!

I always do the from one of the door to the next as well. I think I got that from you maybe? ;) I also always try to start at the less daunting side…but maybe that’s because my room gets a lot more messy than your average room…haha :)

I doubt it… have you seen our office lately? :-P I don’t know where you or I got it, but I think we all do it!

Great tips!!!
I like to leave empty baskets in different rooms as “catch alls” Instead of a room getting cluttered, stuff gets dropped into the basket and when I get time at the end of a day or two, the basket is all I have to clean out. Helps out big-time!

I am very “bipolar” when it comes to cleaning. Some days I am a bit too relaxed and I don’t mind little messes everywhere, and other days I want everything tidy. I do love a clean kitchen, and I always stack dishes next to the sink, wipe of the table and all the other counters so that the kitchen looks cleaner and tricks me a bit. ;)

Hi Anna!
I struggle with cleaning soo much. It’s nice when I clean and see a clean place–but when it gets trashed before the next day, I am SO discouraged. It takes so long for me to get it in order, for it to be undone so quickly.
I’m excited for Sarah Mae’s new e-book coming out called “31 Days to Clean”, but it’s about so much more than cleaning. The tag line is “Having a Martha house the Mary way”. It is devotionals about keeping perspective, but also has some cleaning challenges (it comes out on Monday). Anyways, the point is, I feel you!!

The Homemakers Challenge will be digging into this e-book in May.

Anyways, I didn’t even come here to talk about all that, ha ha (your post distracted me ;-) )

Actually, I was coming by to see how you’re doing because I haven’t “seen” you lately, and I notice you haven’t blogged in a couple weeks. Is everything OK? Miss you girl!! :) I value your input and really enjoy connecting with you. *Hugs*

Hey Anna, Just checking in to see how you’re doing. Noticed you haven’t posted in awhile. Praying for you!

Hi Anna, I too notice you haven’t posted in a while ~ praying for you!

I usually try to daily do a quick clean… this is five minutes per room (or three if the “room” is the entryway)using a timer. My little girls love it and missed it when I had to take a little break (after our baby was born). We work very fast and in an exciting way (children love excitement!) i.e. on a Monday I can dust the living room while one little girl takes all stray things to there places around the house and the other one waters plants. The next day I can sweep the floor and have them wipe the door posts or clean around the fireplace…. etc. And often I have my little guy who is about your little guy’s age sit in some of the rooms and watch us… though now he can follow directions just enough to take a toy or some other stray thing to the room I tell him to (or at least it gets part way there) and that makes him feel like he is a part of our cleaning too! I am usually amazed at how much can be done in just five minutes a day! The only two rooms I can’t finish in five minutes a day are the play room (that should have 2 five minutes a day ~ one for the cleaning in the morning and one before bed) and the kitchen. ~ not sure if this plan would work so well for you because you don’t have older little feet to keep busy but it is what I do :)

PLEASE post! I miss yours posts so much! I will ask you a question so that if you want you can post an answer. I would like to know how you are preparing for life with two babies! Are they going to share a room? :)

Thank you everyone for your prayers and for checking on me! I really appreciate it! :-)
