Be Present as a Mother

I love this convicting quote from Joy at The Stay-at-Home Missionary:

“And, with being home, make sure that you aren’t absent while still ‘being’ there. Things like TV and computer can take you away from your high calling just as much as going somewhere in the car. 1 Timothy 5:13 talks about women going from house to house being idle busybodies. Well, I think that going from blog to blog” [my addition: or Facebook profile to Facebook profile] “could be the same thing. I’m not saying never visit blogs, just really do try to keep it in check.

So, if Facebook, Twitter, blogging, or e-mail is your thing….set a timer, and when it goes off, walk away! Spend time with your kids face to face, not just in the same room.”
I think as women we do have a particular temptation to be “idle busybodies,” to be lazy and gossipy and not quietly focused on our own duties and families. This can take shape in many different forms – whether it’s wasting time reading blogs, or being addicted to celebrity magazines and websites, or talking on the phone to friends, etc. I want my children to remember a mom who spent time with them, not in front of the computer. I also want them to see me being diligent and creative in homemaking, and that requires time and effort.

How do you manage your online time, whether you’re a mother or not? Or maybe it’s not the Internet that tempts you to waste time, but some other form of entertainment… what are ways you keep yourself in balance?

Good post. I’ve been feeling convicted of this myself lately – particularly with just watching too much TV when there are so many other things I could be doing.

Hey there! Nice to meet you. This post is great. I love that quote. And oh, what a great (yet challenging) thing to set a timer!

It reminds me of this post I wrote:

http://ordinaryinspirations.blogspot.com/2009/10/is-your-husband-being-left-in-dust.html

It is about leaving our husbands in the dust, but It can apply to children as well.

Thank you!

Traci, nice to meet you! Thank you for sharing your blog post. I’ve been really convicted and encouraged lately by bloggers who write in that same vein – challenging ourselves as women to put first things first.

This is good! And something I think all women struggle with. As I sit here blogging instead of doing laundry. ;)

Thanks for sharing this! I think this goes for anyone, moms, daughters, singles…
Blessings,
Kate

WOW!! A conviction I have been feeling of late…thank you!!!
