Stork Parking
I never gave much thought to stork parking before I was pregnant. A few businesses have it – special parking spaces designated for expectant mothers. I saw a couple of blog posts about it and thought I would share my own opinion, since I’m about to leave for Walmart and all.
Is it really necessary? No. I think it’s meant to be a courtesy, and it’s a nice thought. I have used it at Babies ‘R’ Us because there are always open spots. And let me tell you, I would appreciate it when I’m pushing a full cart of groceries halfway across the parking lot. Especially if I lived in one of the northern states where it’s icy. I would also have appreciated it back when I was sick to my stomach 24/7.
But truly, I think courtesy parking spots (other than handicapped, obviously) should be for customers with young children, or (bonus!) pregnant women with small children. For most pregnant women (and there are exceptions, of course; I don’t have any complications), it’s a lot easier to walk across a parking lot, even at 40+ weeks, than it is to unload one or more small children and take them into the store safely.
So. My $.02. What do you think?

YEP! Our Meijer store has stork parking and I always try and use it. (being pregnant AND having toddlers) But after you deliver and when you have small kids it would be nice to still be able to use the spot since you have more little ones along with you.
I can’t think of who, but one of the stork parking spots says, “new or expecting mothers” I like that!
Yes to the parking spot for pregnant lady with lots of small children!!! I sometimes wish grocery stores had them.
Interesting – I’ve actually never heard of Stork Parking. I’m not sure we really have any here – I’ll have to pay attention next time I go to the store. Our mall actually does have designated spaces for mothers of young children though. But I’ve never noticed anything like that at grocery stores or anything.
I’ve never heard of such a thing, but I think your right. Parking for women with children would be very practical.
I feel like I’m waiting along with you, Anna, to “meet” you precious little son. Know that I’m praying for you and a safe delivery. I don’t suppose you will be going to New Attitude/Next this year… Wow, it seems like yesterday you were blogging about going. It’s my first year being able to go, and it would have been so cool to actually meet you! Your posts have always been such a blessing to me.
Just stumbled upon this post in my referrals (hey nice blog theme! heh) and I have to say that I was hugely pregnant in the winter with lots of snow and ice, and I LOOOVED the expectant mother parking. It was so hard to walk through the puddles and snow, so being a little closer was lovely. However, if it weren’t for the snow, I agree- I probably would have been just fine.
Also- I’ve totally seen some BARELY pregnant women using those spaces in perfectly good weather. Cheaters.
