Where Mother Is

This is the kind of mother I have – and because of her, the kind of mother I want to someday be:
Amid all these changes, and even with boxes piled high, that house still feels like home for one reason: Mom is there. In fact, when I stop to think about the house I grew up in, that is what I remember most—not the wall color or the knick knacks or the furniture, but how Mom’s love of beauty, her devotion to her husband and children, her work ethic, her pursuit of cleanliness and order, her peace and joy, her constant presence permeated the entire house. I can relate to a little boy who, when asked, “Where is your home?” replied, “Where mother is.”

Hi Anna,
I was so excited that your mom shared your blog with me. How fun to get to know you better by reading your thoughts and ideas. I thought it ironic that your grandmother shared with me this morning that today was her mother’s 94th birthday. Your grandmother was wearing your great grandmother’s pearls. I commented on their beauty and how they looked like new. She smiled wistfully and replied that that was how her mother took care of everything. I walked away with a lump in my throat. I could tell your grandmother loved her mother very much and must miss her dearly. It made me think of my own mother with gratitude and inspired me to be the kind of mom my daughters would remember with fondness on my birthday long after I’m gone and they are grandmothers themselves. May God bless you, Anna. I look forward to reading more of your thoughts.
