My God Is So Big
I babysit for a family with a two-year-old girl and a one-year-old boy. They’re so cute; I love them so much. They’re both adopted and are very close in age. I’ve been babysitting them this whole school year, and I am dreading saying goodbye to them. They are so sweet.
Zoe (not her real name) is at the age where she can learn a lot just by repetition. I’ve been teaching her the shorter catechism. She knows, “Who made you?” “God.” “What else did God make?” “All things.” “Why did God make you and all things?” To that last one, she always responds, “Own GLORY!” (shortened version of, “for His own glory”).
A favorite song we sing a lot is “My God Is So Big.” I’m guessing some of you know it… So strong and so mighty / There’s nothing my God cannot do / The mountains are His, the rivers are His / The stars are His handiwork too… We’ve sung it many times, complete with hand motions. She has it on one of her CDs, too, so she knows it well by now.
Quite a few times this year, while I’ve been singing that song with Zoe, I have to stop and listen to the import of the words. Take a deep breath, wow. My God is so big. And He’s really strong, really mighty. There’s nothing He can’t do. The mountains and rivers belong to Him, and the stars are His handiwork. No matter what is going on in my life, He is bigger. He’s in control. Yay! (As we often say at the end.)

Yay is right!
Anselm of Canterbury referred to God as the “being greater than which cannot be conceived.” As vast and boundless as the universe seems, even that is only a poor, shadowy reflection of God’s infinite nature. Soli Deo Gloria, eh?
I learnt that song only recently. It’s a good one alright. I had other ones we sang as a child
I know exactly what you mean about “listening to your own songs”… too often lyrics, verses, and sayings become stale until we take a moment to breathe and listen. Wow. Our God is so great. Yay!
Anna, this is so great! Just reading this makes my heart rejoice in our Lord. At my old church where I used to live I would get goosebumps when I would hear the teacher as the preschoolers, “What is the chief end of man?” and they would respond in unison, “To glorify God and enjoy Him forever!” How lovely to hear that…especially from the mouths of those who are so young!
Amen! What a great reminder ![]()
our family sings that song. sometimes it seems to be the best way to express how great He is. words seem so inadequate.
Motherhood has helped me revisit the simple truths that are actually the deepest and truest realities.
Your comment reminds me of a passage we read from Prince Caspian. One of the kids notes that Aslan seem bigger, and Aslan says that it’s because the child is bigger–as we grow, Aslan grows, too. Something like that. The point being that we understand how very big He is in a way that we didn’t quite realize when we were small and our problems were small and our little perception of the world was small, too. Now, things are bigger, problems are bigger, the world is much bigger, we realize…but we also know that our God is SO big and SO mighty, there’s NOTHING our God cannot do.
We sang it and believed it.
We listen again, later, and realize how true it really is.

Wow, Ann, I love that! It’s encouraging to think of a gift that comes with growing up - bigger problems can reveal a bigger God.

Is there any way you could send me the hand motions for My God is So Big? I need them for a mission trip to Taiwan. Thank you!
