I could’ve read all night…

[Title is meant to be sung to the tune of "I could've danced all night..."]
I’ve made a delightful rediscovery - children’s books! Of course I have always liked my Anne of Green Gables, Little Women, A Little Princess, Betsy-Tacy, and All-of-a-Kind Family, among others. But there are so many more that I’d forgotten about! For instance…
Five Little Peppers and How They Grew by Margaret Sidney
Journey to America by Sonia Levitin
Number the Stars by Lois Lowry
Stuart Little by E.B. White
My Friend Flicka by Mary O’Hara
…and many, many more. Some of them are so well-written! I especially enjoy books like Journey to America, which I’m reading right now. It’s about a Jewish family fleeing Germany before World War II, so it deals with serious and sad subject matter. It’s very well-written and beautiful in its own way. But because it’s written for middle school or upper elementary age, it’s not going to have all of that “mature” content that adult fiction has. I get so tired of trying to read well-written mainstream fiction, only to find unnecessarily graphic material. Children’s books are a welcome reprieve.

Children’s books are great, I agree. I am reading the Chronicles of Narnia at the moment - I love them!
as an elementary ed major i get to read children’s books all the time and I LOVE IT!! we have a large section of our library that is all childrens books so if I have spare time on campus i am most likely holed up in there
so true! i love revisiting kids books and finding they’re just as magical as i first thought they were years ago!
“Number the Stars” was my favorite book for years! I haven’t read it in so long, but now I just might pick it up again!
If you like that subject matter, another all-time fav of mine was “The Devil’s Arithmetic”–another Holocaust teen novel. Very good stuff.
I have been experiencing the same thing lately. I’ve been reading the Boxcar Children!!
Another beautiful read is ‘Ballet Shoes’ by Noel Streatfield.
I adore reading childrens books!
Anna, I agree with you concerning mature fiction works. I have put books away before simply because of the author using too much vulgar language. I hope you have a wonderful weekend.
I like what C.S. Lewis said about books…basically what he said is that Children’s books are worth rereading over and over again…he thought very highly of Children’s books, and I find them a welcome reprieve…
